Student Media Tech has been helping the Student Media groups create, manage, and maintain web content since 2017. In addition to providing support and services, the department’s primary focus is to provide a real-world working environment and professional development opportunities for student staff. Student staff positions open throughout the year and can be found on Handshake.

Rae Fickle (they/them)

Technology Advisor

Rae has been part of Student Media Technology at Portland State University since 2020. They began as a Student Web Developer, transitioned into a one-year role as Student Project Manager, and now serve as the Tech Advisor for all of Student Media. In their professional staff position, Rae is focused on creating an environment where students can discover their professional voice, develop new skills, and regard mistakes as steps in their growth as creatives and emerging professionals.

Before returning to Portland State, Rae earned an associate degree in Computer Application Systems from Portland Community College, specializing in Website Development & Design. During their studies, they developed a strong interest in web usability and the societal impact of computing—values they hope to integrate into their work with Student Media Technology.

Student Staff

Kaylee Hynes (she/her)

Student Web Developer

Kaylee joined Student Media in 2024 as a Student Web Developer. She enjoys building and maintaining websites and is especially passionate about creating a space on the web for others to express themselves freely and share their creativity with the world.

An international student from Scotland, she earned a BS in Computer Science from the University of Edinburgh and moved to Portland to pursue a masters degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Owen Cook (He/Him)

Student Web Designer

Owen joined Student Media Tech in 2025 as their Student Web Designer. He is currently pursuing a BFA in Graphic Design here at Portland State, focusing on User Interface and User Experience Design. He is fascinated by how we interact with technology and how it will evolve and change in the near future. He is especially interested in how designers can make efforts to make technology more accessible and humanistic.

Prior to his time at PSU, Owen discovered his love for Graphic Design while taking classes at Clackamas Community College. He enjoyed how it challenged his creative problem-solving skills and involved collaboration with others. Once he graduates, he is looking forward to continue working with others in design to create better technology for everyone.
